Once upon a time in a farm on the outskirts of town, there lived a little girl named Mary. Her life began under unfortunate circumstances, as her mother passed away during Mary's birth. Such was the sad beginning to Mary's life.

Her grief-stricken father never recovered from the shock of his wife's death. As Mary grew up, she was the picture of her mother, and she felt her father's resentment every day, knowing that seeing her face only reminded him of the death of his beloved. The years went on and his anger grew as she toiled on the farm. At his hand and at his whim, she suffered day in and day out. Nevertheless, she survived her struggles and blossomed into a beautiful young woman, while her father's hatred for her spun out of control. Until one night in late October. As Mary lay in bed, bedclothes pulled up to her nose to keep out the chilly Autumn air, her father crept into her room as the door swung open with a resounding creak. Mary awoke with a start, and sat up to survey of her room as her father hid in shadow. The room, it seemed, was empty. She lay down to sleep again, but no sooner had her head hit the pillow than her father was upon her, slashing at her and screaming like a man possessed. But the young farm girl overpowered the old man, and through the pain and coppery smell of her own blood, she knocked him to the floor. Her father, mad as he was, took a long look upon her face and lauhged.

"Ah, now she's gone!" He said. "You'll not ever bring her to my mind again!"

Startled by his exclamation, Mary ran to the bathroom to wash the blood from her face and nurse her wounds. But catching sight of herself in the mirror, she let out a shriek. The creature screaming back at her was not her face, but instead a misshapen mass of scars and blood and gore. A monster looked back. A monster of the same size and shape and voice, but not the beautiful face that had driven her father mad.

"A curse on you! A curse on this face!" She screamed aloud. "If anyone dares to search for me, to look upon this face, I swear I'll scratch their eyes out!"

And with that, she ran out the front door into the night, and not her father nor anyone in the town ever saw her again.
